7 Days Holiday from Marrakech Semiramis

Day 1: MARRAKECH – AIT BENHADDOU – DADES

We will collect you from your Riad or the airport; we will travel in the direction of Ouarzazate by crossing the High Atlas over the impressive pass of Tizi n’Tichka at 2260 meters of altitude. This a great mountain range filled with extraordinary landscapes that we cross admiring the Berber territory with typical small adobe villages, strongholds and farmsteads.

We continue on a rough track to reach the magic village of Ait Benhaddou; the best preserved Ksar and one which enjoys the status of World Heritage site declared by UNESCO, its highly ornate adobe houses are encompassed within a strong defensive wall and reinforced by turrets, this spectacular kasbah, built with mud and stones is miraculously still standing. At the time that it was inhabited, high on a hill and surrounded by the desert landscape of the Anti Atlas, it was without any doubt one of the most magical places of Morocco.

We will continue in the direction of Ouarzazate where we stop for lunch and a rest in the surroundings of the largest film studios in the world. It is here that the desert, the oasis, the Kasbahs and the snowy mountains of the Atlas provide an unforgettable backdrop for many well-known movies. Our route will continue quietly toward the valley of the Palm Grove of Skoura, framed by the impressive massif of M’Goun and arid chain of mountains. This extensive palm grove with more than 700,000 palm trees stands out for its important enclave of greenery and life in the arid plateau, an element that distinguishes it from other palm groves is the great concentration of kasbahs that spread throughout the oasis. We will continue toward the Valley of Roses; during the way we will make various stops to contemplate the massive cultivation that this valley offers us, where we will discover an impressive landscape; nature in its alive state and with its harmonious colours make this valley a landscape worthy to admire.

We will arrive at the Dades Valley mid-afternoon, where the valley opens out and its value to the landscape is spectacular with a great architectural value; various ksour, and its numerous kasbahs, many of them in ruins and marked out along the narrow valley, has a special charm and is really such an incredible scene that you are sure to fall in love with it. Dinner and overnight at the hotel or riad.

Day 2: DADES – TODRA GORGE – MERZOUGA

After a good breakfast our path continuous in the direction of TINGHIR in order to deviate toward the famous TODRA GORGE which is more than 100 meters high, with its houses excavated in the rock, a magical place of vertical rocky walls caused by the erosion of the water and the air during centuries, a perfect place for climbers. Surrounded by a river of low flow but of crystalline water we can enjoy this stop for a peaceful stroll. We will continue our way toward Erfoud where we will have the chance to visit the factory of fossilized marble and the Museum of the fossils and minerals which hosts a collection of fossils out of the ordinary. Our trip continues in the direction of RISSANI, arriving finally at the foot of the spectacular dunes of Erg Chebbi, where we take a welcome tea while resting and we prepare to ride the camels that will take us to the foot of the large dune: during the course of an hour and a half we can go taking photographs; an experience that without a doubt will astound you. At night you can see that the desert takes a very different colour and the time change because it can be quite cool depending on the time you go. We are served dinner to the rhythm of the drums being played and songs being sung, and as not the big fireplace will keep us company until it´s time to go to sleep. So it is best to enjoy this magical night and authentic without any worries under the starry sky of the desert. Dinner and overnight at the Haima.

Day 3: MERZOUGA – FES

One of the experiences that must not be missed in the desert is seeing the dawn; impressive landscapes of dunes that happen before our eyes and that are changing as the sun rises over the horizon; a visual spectacle that you are not going to forget.

The camels await us to return us to our riad where we can take a shower and enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast. Our adventure continues and our first stop will be Rissani; very famous for its souk and for being the last commercial stop for people to trade before the desert, this proud and dignified city has a special atmosphere we can almost breathe in as we stroll through the markets. Rissani has something not found in any other place of Morocco, a twilight ambience owing to its roofs that filter the late sun into an explosion of colours and rich outstanding smells of the combination of spices so well-known.

We will continue on our way to FES, passing through the Ziz Valley; one of the hidden treasures of Morocco where the river feeds the Palm Grove of Tafilalet that extends about 20 Km winding along the riverbed with its endless palm trees making it the largest in the world and we get to enjoy it during our route.

We will arrive in AZROU; an important Berber population located in the interior of the Middle Atlas and known for its forest of cedars surrounding it where we can admire the many monkeys that live in full freedom in this forest. We pass by IFRANE; a small mountain village that we will be captivated by for its cleanliness and good condition, also referred to as “the Switzerland of Morocco”; a holiday destination for the wealthy people around the country. In the afternoon we arrive to FES.

Day 4: FES – FES

Today we will spend the whole day visiting this great city, the oldest, rich, cultural, religious, spiritual and mysterious of the four imperial cities of Morocco, where you can view all that has not suffered the passage of time.

The visits that define to Fes are:

Chouara Tannery: it is the most extensive and best known of the four traditional tanneries that continue with life in the heart of the medina of Fes.

The Karaouine Mosque: The most important and with one of its greatest architectural complexes.

Bab Boujloud; the most important gateway for access to the Medina, the oldest area and the most charming in the city.

Royal Palace of Fes: from the XIV century is one of the largest and most ancient of Morocco, although you cannot visit inside, it is worth a visit to contemplate its seven doors.

Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss: Sanctuary dedicated to Moulay Idriss; King of Morocco between the years 807 and 828, one of the founders of Fes.

Seffarine square; located in the heart of the Medina, and where one of the oldest professions in Fes is kept: the coppersmiths craft.

Madrassas; Old Koranic schools, where students sometimes resided, and Fes has three, the only one that can be visited is the Medersa Cherratine, which differs from the others by its ornate functional style.

We will eat in a typical restaurant of the Medina (paid by the client) and will end the visit of the city, free afternoon to walk through this city. Dinner and overnight at the hotel or riad.

Day 5: FES – VOLUBILIS – MEKNES – RABAT

Today after the breakfast we will leave for Volubilis; an ancient Roman city founded in the third century B.C., this is the largest Roman settlement in the country and with the best preserved ruins of North Africa and, declared a UNESCO site. It still maintains very well the layout of the streets and houses and even all the rooms are distinguishable, some of them with some beautiful perfectly preserved mosaics.

We will continue to travel to Meknes, one of the four imperial cities and with a rich heritage of monuments. Its huge square that separates the imperial city from its old town makes us remember the famous square of Marrakech “Djemma el Fna” but this one is much quieter. The indoor covered market where there are numerous shows concentrated gives both the indigenous population and the tourist a different show.

After lunch we will leave towards Rabat where we arrive in the middle of the afternoon. Accommodation in a hotel or riad.

Day 6: RABAT – CASABLANCA – MARRAKECH

After breakfast we will visit the city of Rabat; a completely western modern city with residential neighbourhoods but that still preserves at the same time places like the Medina and the Kasbah anchored in time. It is a city of contrasts: elegant modern areas and at the same time poor overfull neighbourhoods.

The medina is one of the old parts of the city, a huge market directed both to nationals and to tourists and very always active.

We will visit the outsides of the Royal Palace and its gardens, and the guided tour of the medina will be at the hands of our local guide, the tower of Hassan II; very well walled with its palm tree interiors will be another visit that we cannot miss. In the afternoon we will continue toward Marrakech where we arrive in the middle of the afternoon.

Day 7: MARRAKECH – MARRAKECH

Today we visit the great city of Marrakech in the hands of a local guide to discover its fascinating history through the famous Koutoubia, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the gardens of the Menara.

You can eat at a typical restaurant in the medina (to be paid for by the client) and the afternoon will be free to discover for yourselves the charms of this city, to walk through the streets of the medina, get lost in its immense market or savour traditional Moroccan food in the Djemma el-Fna Square. Visiting this city means being able to observe the essence of Morocco which is always in constant change. The former beauty of the city is still alive today, with the smell of fresh mint, the tastiest spices and the sound of the snake charmers and the hustle and bustle of its impressive souk, the largest in all of Morocco. Marrakech is all this and much more; the capital of the south and the epicenter of tourism and handicrafts.

The main focal point of the city is the medina, the souk and its beautiful Djemaa-El Fna Square, tourists often lose themselves in the Medina, it is very common, but this, as opposed to medinas as big as the one in Fes, involves no risk. In its alleys, the traveller will find shops of the most varied products, as well as food stalls where the traditional snail soup is served and if you are attracted by the intense smell of the mint, you will reach a stall full of fascinating herbs.

The alleyways of the Medina all lead to the Djemma el-Fna Square. This is a very busy square, sometimes overwhelming to those who are visiting for the first time. But it is a magical place and without doubt, it is difficult to stop only for a short time. In the morning the square is full of stalls selling juice and dried fruit then in the evening jugglers, magicians, snake charmers and storytellers take over. This square has recently been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Accommodation in Marrakech.
